COMING VERY SOON
As debate intensifies over the value AI is delivering, or can deliver, in the enterprise – and many initiatives remain stuck in the pilot stage (except a few) – it is worth taking a deeper dive into what actually makes a digital transformation a lasting success. More specifically, what turns a promising concept – a solution sketch, or early blueprint, using new technology – into long-term user adoption, and sustained business value.
Drawing on 25 years of experience delivering digital solutions for operations in physical product companies, this article focuses on one critical element that consistently determined whether a business implementation succeeded or not. This is based on implementing new, often unproven technologies that users would not embrace simply because they were executive mandates, high dollar or high stakes “strategic” investments, or “aligned” with a company’s technology roadmap.
The learnings come from organizations operating global and regional supply networks. However, they can be extended for other areas of the enterprise as well. While the enabling technology evolved (‘client-server’ to ‘cloud-native’ in its various forms, and now ‘AI-native’ capabilities), one lesson remained remarkably consistent: successful transformations were those that inspired not just a handful of power users who mastered usage of the new solution, but energized a broader community of engaged users who thoughtfully adopted, eagerly championed, and continuously evolved the solution.
(The examples are drawn from physical product companies operating global or regional supply networks. I use the term supply networks deliberately, as I believe it better reflects modern interconnected operating eco-systems than the traditional term supply chains.)
What’s that Critical Element
